The way French is taught in Year 1 to Year 4 is very dynamic and our pupils have thoroughly enjoyed learning over the last few weeks through a variety of songs, rhymes, poems, folk tales and stories, whereby they are able to develop their listening skills and comprehension of the language as well as improving their vocabulary. The content of the lessons focuses mainly on the listening and speaking part of the French language, while expanding a wider understanding of France and the French speaking world. The use of conversational role-play in various settings, such as La café, Paris, L’aéroport, le marché et la boutique de vétements all enhances the learning experience, which is evident in the photos from class!
The topics covered in Year 1 to Year 4 are food and drink, animals, body parts, classroom instructions, French speaking countries, family members, French celebrations, classroom items, clothes, transport and the interior of the home and garden. Within these topics we also cover some basic grammatical rules and vocabulary.
As a member of the French Institute, we attend different language days with selected year groups, termly. This is a good opportunity for the children to practise the vocabulary learnt in class in a different French setting and we are able to borrow resources and educational materials to support the teaching and learning.
The school has subscribed to Linguascope, an interactive software, full of resources for teachers, parents and pupils. The children are encouraged to use it at home, so they can improve their French. Please do get in touch if you would like the user name and password for www.linguascope.co.uk
Learning another language is not just about learning vocabulary, it is also learning about another culture. Our pupils love learning a language the fun way!
